🦋 Personality
Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. For Original Characters, you will need to choose six questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.
- Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?
- If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
- What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
- Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react?
Damen doesn't really believe in anything supernatural. Despite being from a country based vaguely on Ancient Greece and from a novel that is generally shelved in fantasy, there's not really any magic or even mention of deities in his series. There is mention of his country's use of aqueducts, and of his experience with physicians whose work seemed more like pseudoscience than anything that actually works. The idea of believing in magic feels a little embarrassing and old fashioned, from a less enlightened time before. The world is what it's observed to be, and while he isn't a scientist, he is realistic enough not to go around miracles.
Finding himself all of a sudden in a realm where magic is definitely real will be a shock for sure. But so will finding himself ina world with modern technology, so he's gonna have a lot to adjust to. It will be hard for him to find the difference between magic and advanced technology as they'll both be so far beyond his frame of reference.
Damen is very loyal to his country and knows he has a duty to his throne. If he had time to think on it, he'd likely reluctantly decide that he couldn't afford to chase someone into another realm because he is more than himself. He has a whole nation to think of.
That is, of course, if he had time to think on it.
If he acted on instinct, he'd follow any number of people in, acting on his protective urges. His friends, comrades and soldiers, random strangers who seemed in need of help…. He often moves to protect people whether or not it's a good idea and it is the sort of thing that gets him in trouble.
There is only one person who he would likely follow through even if he had the time to realize it's a bad idea, and that's Laurent. He is in love with Laurent and aware that the time might come when he'll have to choose between duty to his country and duty to his heart, and when it comes down to it… his heart will win. But it would tear him apart to have to make that choice.
His loyalty and sense of duty! He grew up a prince steeped in privilege but he's always thought that meant his duty was first and foremost to take care of his people. Even his view on slavery, shaped by naivete, was that it was a fair trade of perfect obedience for perfect care. His plans to escape Vere were put on hold as soon as he recognized that he could not do it without leaving the other slaves to be mistreated and tormented by a country that didn't appreciate them. He slips surprisingly easily into the role of servant once he's there willingly (and wearing more clothes) since he's no stranger to working hard and taking care of his equipment and his people. Once he's decided he's on Laurent's side, there's no chance he'll stray, as it wouldn't be honorable, and he finds himself helping even while knowing the information could be used against him and his country.
It would be like the end of planet of the apes when the guy sees the statue of liberty and realizes he's been home the whole time but he's too far in the future to do anything about it. He's been working so hard to get back home to Akielos, to take back his country and defeat his enemies, and he's faced obstacle after obstacle. To finally get home so long after everyone he was trying to help is dead? It would be absolutely devastating. He'd feel like he had failed his people and himself, and he'd worry about what had happened to his country.
But there would also be something freeing in the fresh start. He'd be able to embrace a sort of freedom he lacked as a prince and king, to live anonymously and make his own choices. If Laurent were returning with him (since he's already in the game), the two of them could have the love that seems so far out of reach at his canon point and simply live their lives.
He'd struggle believing it was okay for him to have, though, when he failed so completely at protecting his country.
