So? My life is on pause at the whim of someone I neither know nor trust. That he will supposedly leave my entire world on pause until I return does not make me feel as much better as you seem to think it should.
I was an inmate, when I first got here. I know it's not pleasant to be ripped away from home and dumped here. Going back isn't a question of ticking a few things off a list, though, and the sooner you realize that, the better.
Yet you have no qualms dragging others through that slog. And your only motivation for being reformed is a fear of punishment?
I have lived my life with all the honor I could. I protect those weaker than myself. Everything I do, I do for my country and my people. Please explain what precisely it is that makes you better than me.
From my perspective? Not a damn thing. The only difference between you and me is luck and time. I'm not better than you just because I graduated and anyone who'd say I was is a fool.
The point is that you get a second chance. A chance to figure out why you ended up here and do it over, better. And I'm doing it because the Admiral offered me a deal to save the soldiers under my command.
Wardens make deals for things we can't do on our own. The men and women under my command are at the brink of death and there's too many enemies to deal with without an outside intervention. So I made a deal for him to provide that.
I am King Damianos of Akielos. I have been wielding a sword since I was old enough to lift one. I have lead men into battle since I was sixteen, and I was in the midst of reclaiming my kingdom before I ended up here.
So as you might imagine, I'm in a bit of a hurry to get home.
High stakes, yes. You'll be wanting a permanent warden as soon as possible, then. Though unless things have changed since I was here last, such assignments seem unfortunately up to the Admiral's whim.
I'm not familiar with Akielos, I'm afraid. It sounds Greek—or—oh, hell, what did they call it back then? Achaean? Ἀχαιοί?
Wouldn't go so far as to say I speak it, but I know a few choice words and phrases. My best friend has a sometimes-boyfriend who's Greek. Your Akielos might be ... another universe's version of the region that I know as Greece, if that makes any sense.
The role of the temporary warden is chiefly to make sure that you're not left entirely alone. I can put in requests to the Admiral on your behalf, advocate for you if need be. And if you were to cause any trouble, it would be my job to ensure that appropriate consequences were meted out.
Not especially, but as I said before... [he shrugs a shoulder expansively.] Nothing else does either.
And why did the Admiral decide you are so much more worthy than I to make these choices? I still don't understand what I've done that is so terrible as to send me to magic prison. I have done my best to live my life with honor and protect my people. What more was I supposed to do?
Absent your file, I can only guess at how you ended up here.
But often people who act with the best intentions do so without regard for further consequences, and that's something a full-time warden is meant to discuss with you. I know that's not a very satisfactory answer, but I don't have a lot to work with, save for your word and my own experiences here.

If I really wanted to kill people, I wouldn't need a sword to do it.

You seem the sort who can kill with anything he can get his hands on. [He means this as a compliment.] I'm still not giving you a weapon.

Good afternoon. I'm Una Persson, and it appears that I'm to be your warden for the month.
Have you got anything that you need assistance with?

Generally inmates don't get weapons unless they've proven that they can be trusted with them.

You treat us like children.

Congratulations on the lack of murder. That does put you above some people around here.
Will you tell me a bit about yourself? So that I can understand your perspective a little better.

Greek? [He raises an eyebrow.] I'm not familiar, but it sounds as though you speak Akielon.
[Yeah, it's basically Greek.]
